What is Mediterranean Flatbread?

Mediterranean flatbread is a type of flatbread pizza. It features toppings including artichokes, tomatoes, olives, prosciutto, and sweet and garlicky dressing. It’s a simple, quick, and easy appetizer or light lunch that comes together in about 20 minutes!

The secret to this easy flatbread is using store-bought naan bread. So you don’t have to deal with yeast or any type of raw dough for this recipe. Naan bread is readily available at most supermarkets. Then, a quick toast in the oven transforms it into the perfect crunchy base.

You will love how quick and easy this recipe is to make!

Flatbread Toppings

For this Mediterranean flatbread recipe, you’ll need naan bread and also the following topping ingredients:

ingredients for mediterranean flatbread.
  • Artichokes: To save on prep time, look for marinated artichokes that are already quartered. I love using marinated artichokes as they are more flavorful than the artichokes in brine.
  • Tomatoes: Fresh grape tomatoes or cherry tomatoes can be used instead.
  • Sun-Dried Tomatoes: Sun-dried tomatoes have an intense sweet-tart flavor, so a little goes a long way. You’ll need oil-packed tomatoes.
  • Olives: Buy sliced black olives instead of whole olives to save on prep time.
  • Prosciutto: It’s an Italian dry-cured ham that is usually thinly sliced and very salty. Pre-packaged prosciutto is usually sold near the deli counter.
  • Basil: If you’re not a fan of basil, try fresh parsley instead.

The topping ingredients are combined and tossed with a simple dressing that consists of olive oil, wine vinegar, garlic, mustard, and honey.

  • Crumbled Feta
  • Mozzarella

Recipe FAQs

Can I use pizza dough instead of naan?

It won’t be a true Mediterranean flatbread, but you can use the toppings and dressing with pizza dough if preferred.

What is the difference between naan bread and flatbread?

Naan is a type of leavened flatbread made with all-purpose flour, wheat flour, or a combination of both. Traditional recipes cook in a tandoor (clay oven), but baked varieties have become increasingly popular.

Can I store leftovers?

This recipe is best served right away as the naan is likely to become soggy. However, if needed, you can store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for 1-2 days. Reheat your flatbread in the oven at 350F to help it crisp back up when you’re ready to eat.
